SUMMER 2018

ORDINARY TIME

“The Life of Faith”

“Ordinary Time” is a valuable season in the Christian Year.  Signified by the color green, it reminds us that regular worship is fundamental to the Christian life.  This summer our theme will be “The Life of Faith.”  We will be focusing on faith as a lifelong process of growth.  The Bible offers us important insights into the common experiences of living with God through Christ.  Our guides will emerge from all parts of the Bible. Mark will invite us to respond to the invitation of Christ to follow him.  John will take us deep into the mystery of being united to Christ.  James will challenge us to show the genuineness of faith through righteous deeds.  Job, Ruth, and Naomi, will role-model for us how to be faithful in suffering.  At the end of the summer, the book of Hebrews will urge us to complete the life of faith and the book of Revelation will reveal to us the glorified Christ.  When all is said and done, our Lord and Savior promises us that genuine, deep, persevering faith, will be vindicated.

MARK: FAITH AWAKENED

The Gospel of Mark is the story of Jesus, the Son of God (Mark 1:1).  Jesus comes with divine authority and power. He teaches, he confronts, he forgives, he heals -- he awakens us to faith.

JOHN: FAITH GOES DEEPER

The gospel of John encourages us to draw all our spiritual nourishment from Christ.  He is the Heavenly One, sent from God. He invites us to seek only the Kingdom of God, which he reveals.  It is a gift from God to be able to do so. When our lives are constantly guided by Jesus’ death we will share in his eternal life.  There is no one else to whom we can turn for truth and life.

JAMES: FAITH TAKES ACTION

James, a pillar of the ancient church, writes his letter to all Christians who want to know that their faith in Jesus is genuine and growing.  Far from being merely intellectual assent to “beliefs”, faith shows itself through action. A person of faith is always seeking to be righteous.  A Christian is known for honoring others, exercising self-control, displaying wisdom, and living a life of prayer.

JOB and RUTH: FAITH SUFFERS

The Bible teaches us that people of genuine faith and righteous life are not exempt from suffering.  The Bible shows us that pain prompts us to cry out to God, to seek justice, and to encounter God in new ways.  Grief and loss impact God’s people in profound ways, yet God proves his faithfulness.

HEBREWS: FAITH PERSEVERES

The ancient Hebrews had to make a long journey from bondage in Egypt to the freedom of the Promised Land.  Sometimes they would get tired or discouraged or distracted...and they would lose faith in God. Not all of them were successful in the journey.  The author of Hebrews says, Don’t let the same thing happen to you. You have been called to Heaven -- be committed to the journey. Stay strong in faith!
